Who will save: you or they? The first test of the new Kia Rio

A good budget? A well-stocked car? And, maybe, a dynamic model of the B-class? Or is it all at once? Studied on the roads of St. Petersburg.

Immediately let’s be frank: in modern Russia, the Kia Rio is a car that really does not need a presentation. You can not know that according to the statistics of recent months, Rio sells better than “Lada Grants”, but it’s enough to look into almost every yard, so that everything becomes clear. Therefore, the emergence of Kia Rio a new generation – the event is truly epoch-making. Until now, the people have not “cooled down” from the previous car, but a new one has already appeared. Will it repeat the fate of the bestseller?

Release a decent sequel after a very successful release is difficult not only in the world of cinema, but also in the auto industry. However, the designers of the Korean company really tried to make the new Kia Rio more attractive than its predecessor. The car as if screaming: “I’m better, more and more modern!” A front lensed optics, a large air intake on the bumper and a strip on the boot lid so generally create a feeling of a car of a higher class. It’s a pity that this impression is compensated by the loss of branded features. Even the new Hyundai Solaris unmistakably identify in the stream is much easier than Rio.

For “real boys”?

But the salon Kia Rio began to look really solid. Just look at this three-spoke steering wheel, the front fascia of Audi, the multimedia system, the gear lever, the climate control unit’s twists, tough but robust looking plastics, and even the leather in the finish! Well, like the skin. Generally speaking, this is the so-called “eco-leather” or polyurethane leather, which is also used in accordance with the requirements of animal advocates. But by touch it can not be distinguished from the present. In general, “the boys from the district” will certainly be envious when they see this.

True, the leather salon is the privilege of the top version of Premium. But even in simpler trim levels, the new Kia Rio does not fold. To the convenience of the driver’s seat there are no complaints – thanks to the wide adjustments of the steering wheel, as well as the readability of the instrument panel. Only the climate installation was upset by its work: even at the temperature set at +22 degrees it blows as if there is a sultry Arabian desert outside the window, and you will not survive without an invigorating breeze in the face. As a result, the system still has to be adjusted manually. But in the rich version of the car also pleases the navigation system with a 7-inch touch screen, support for Android Auto and Apple Car Play and even a rear-view camera with dynamic markings!

Expensive-rich? And still wide! In the literal sense of the word. The width of the Kia Rio increased by 40 mm to 1740 mm, and now passengers will not have to “push their elbows.” True, the ideal car for a taxi, the new Rio is unlikely to become. Although nominally the height of the car has not changed – all the same 1470 mm – a new line of the roof literally presses on the passengers of the rear row. Even I, with my height of 173 centimeters now and then hit the ceiling, what can I say about the more tall passengers. In addition, the volume of the trunk of Rio was reduced by 20 liters to 480 liters. With taxi drivers, everything is clear. But now the question is to you personally: do you even pay attention to such things? Most likely, no, especially if you drive at the wheel. And the previous Kia Rio was pretty good in “driving” disciplines, as far as it’s even possible for a B-class car. And the new one leaves an entirely positive impression.

Initially, the steering wheel may seem somewhat “clamped” – the whole point is that the hydraulic booster was replaced by an electric one, and the mechanism itself was moved 28 mm ahead. But you get used to it very quickly, and you understand that Kia Rio is much more accurate. And even if it’s not close to a sports car, but in the turns the car is going quite “cheerfully.” In general, if you are awoken by nostalgia for the “cherry nine”, most likely, you will be satisfied.

But if you participate in the new Kia Rio in traffic light races, then only with classmates. The engines on the sedan completely coincide with those on the Hyundai Solaris, these are gasoline engines with a volume of 1.4 (100 hp, 132 N • m) and 1.6 (123 hp, 151 N • m), combined with 6-speed mechanics or a 6-speed automatic. To try the first modification, alas, it was not possible, but a more powerful sedan was available with both transmissions. Most likely, Kia Rio c AKP will buy more often, especially in large cities. By and large, the only claim to this box is in a few weird settings of the gas pedal. The car then “tears” from the spot, then for half a second thinks at a kick-down. Although the average driver does not even notice, the transmission switches very smoothly, which is much more important in urban conditions. However, we strongly recommend Kia Rio to try the mechanic. Already painfully clearly on it include transmissions, and the grip pleases informativeness.

Soundproofing? Also improved. Although, of course, the wonders of the car belonging to the B-class, there is no need to wait: from under the arches at high speeds and uneven roads the rumble still comes. But what really happened in the new Kia Rio, so it’s a suspension. Although the general scheme has not changed, McPherson is used from the front, and the semi-independent beam is behind, other important changes have been made. For example, the castor of the front wheels is enlarged, hydraulic shock absorbers with progressive stiffness in the front and vertically mounted shock absorbers from the rear are used, as well as new bolted connections in the hub mountings. As a result, Kia Rio has become both more comfortable and more venturable at the same time. The car perfectly copes with the middle pits and lying policemen, but on the broken undercoat it is necessary to try very much to “punch” the suspension. And we should not forget about the ground clearance of 16 centimeters – just like the “Lada Grants” and some modern crossovers. Although it is better to take the Rio with bigger 16-inch wheels as much as possible – they are more stable and less swinging on them. Complaints can cause only shaking the car on small irregularities, but even then – if you previously went by car with comfortable settings.

When “saving” is a curse

In general, with the change of generation Kia Rio became more, more comfortable and got rich equipment. Thought over to the smallest detail? No matter how it is! These very little things are able to spoil the impression of the car. Well, why the boot lid can be opened only from the salon or from the key fob? Of course, there is a small alternative – to stand for three seconds near the luggage compartment of an unincorporated car with a key in your pocket, but this option is the privilege of the most expensive complete set. A simple opening boot with a button is not even a car worth almost one million rubles. On this list of small punctures does not end. In the backs of the front seats there is only one pocket – that is in the basic configuration, that in the pathos versions, and the armrest for the rear passengers is missing as a class.

In the sun visors there is a mirror, but there is no lighting, even as one standing on the step below the Kia Picanto . A mirror can be closed only from the driver’s side, but not with the passenger. Further more! The audio system, regardless of the version, turns off about 10 minutes after the engine is turned off. And to include it simply by pressing the button of the receiver, as practically on all cars, it is impossible – it is necessary to start the engine again. The washer reservoir was increased to 4.6 liters, but for some reason not up to 5 liters, as in a standard liquid canister. The lack of automatic mode for all window lifters, except for the driver’s in Asian cars, is generally a parable in the language. Well, and a cherry on the cake was a system that begins to squeamishly squeak, if you left the key in the ignition, but at the same time opened the door. And with the optics turned on, this “scream” is in no way connected, simply, according to the creators, you can not open the door without removing the key.

All these little things cause only one simple question: “Why?”. Also the answer will simply sound: “Saving”. But after all Kia Rio – initially the model is massive. Many of the potential buyers of this car are unlikely to be interested in the nuances of the suspension or the thrust of the engine at high speeds, but they will notice how the trunk opens here. Will you say that we are niggling? But when you find out the prices for a car, “nit-picking” does not seem so unfounded! Base Kia Rio with 1.4-liter 100-horsepower engine and 6-speed mechanics is offered at a price of 669 900 rubles, and, importantly, equipped with air conditioning, ABS + ESC systems, a tire pressure sensor and much more. A car with a more powerful 1.6-liter 123-horsepower engine is already 754,900, and this is already the second-highest Comfort package. The most affordable Kia Rio with a 6-speed “automatic” will cost 769,900 rubles, the Luxe version – at least 779,900 rubles. Well, the “top” equipment of Prestige and Premium will cost 899,900 and 989,900 rubles, respectively.

Almost a million for a B-class car? Is not it fat ?! Alas, these are the realities of our days. And the competitors, if not the same, then a very similar situation. For example, Lada Vesta costs from 545 900 to 735 900 rubles, Volkswagen Polo will cost 599 900 – 896 900 rubles, and it will be possible to buy the updated Skoda Rapid very soon for the sum from 604 000 to 950 000 rubles. Of course, each of the competitors has its advantages and disadvantages, as we will surely tell in future comparative tests, as soon as this opportunity arises. If we talk about the soplatformny Solaris, it is slightly cheaper than Kia Rio: from 624 900 to 909 900 rubles. But Rio can boast air conditioning in the “base”, as well as interesting options, for example, heating the windshield. In general, it is obvious that the struggle for the client is very hot, and in Kia they are trying very hard to make the new Rio appear as good as the previous one.

PS – After reading this text, you may have a question: “With the sedan Kia Rio everything is clear. And where is the hatchback?”. We answer – the traditional hatchback in the new Kia Rio will not. Instead, the line should have an “upbeat” car, which will become a direct competitor to Renault Sandero Stepway and Lada XRay. True, when exactly this happens, representatives of the Korean company have not yet disclosed.
