Test the most powerful production sedan available in Europe
When the five-meter Cadillac CTS-V accelerates to “hundreds” for the super-Karakov 3.7 seconds, it’s really impressive. But will not the most powerful car of the American brand be fast until the first turn?
“M-yes, what will this time be for the Moscow Raceway: turtle riding with a snake behind the instructor or the plug-in configuration of the route prescribed by the cones, accompanied by the requirement not to disable the stabilization system?” – scrolled thoughts in my head on the way to the racing track near Volokolamsk.
And what do you think? I did not believe the instructor’s words when he said: “Today we skate in a track-day format. Here are cars for you and do whatever you want with them. The main thing – do not forget to cool the brakes and tires. ”
Uhhh! In a state of euphoria I jump “into the steering wheel” of a lush bright red sports sedan, dive immersed in the bucket seat, adjust and try to find the same racing mode of motion in which the motor gives out all 649 forces, the shock absorbers clamped like the fists of participants in fights without rules, and the eight-step the machine starts direct strikes to hammer the gears. So-so! “Highway”, “Sports”, “Snow”, “Track” … What? “Track”? Yes, that’s right, according to Russian translators, the most extreme mode “Track” should be called. Well, not the point. I cut the “path” – and go!
Well, who’s the blockhead?
The first round I pass with the stabilization system on, at a calm familiarizing pace, in which, by the way, the machine is not perceived to be so “evil”. In the cabin is very comfortable and quiet, even sports “exhaust” is almost not audible. But if you just go on a straight line and give the sedan a savory “kick”, as the entire interior was filled with thunder, and a crazy thrust of 850 Nm fell on the rear wheels. Such a torque can move a plane with a mass of 300 tons. Well, now imagine what this return makes with a car that weighs 150 times less.
And I’ll say: flatten and teleport until the next turn. It is still not very clear what is more impressive: the brutal dynamics generated by the 6.2-liter supercharged V8, or a howling drive supercharger, singing a duet with a bear growling of the exhaust system (listen to the audio recording on the link above). Such a high-lying polyphony in the cabin reigns, including, and thanks to a clever chip: under the hood is a microphone, which translates the sound of the unit directly into the speakers of the audio system. So it turns out that in quiet mode it’s quiet, but in active mode it’s sweetly loud.
On the next lap the instructor and colleagues clearly thought that something was wrong with me or the car: in each bend the tires whistled furiously, the car drove frankly along the wrong trajectory, and the front wheels jerked nervously and jerked from side to side. The fact that I just decided to feel in the shoes of one of the possible types of potential buyers Cadillac CTS-V. Let’s call it “dummy”: the man who first sat behind the wheel of such a powerful technique and, not listening to the advice of experienced pilots, fell out on the racetrack for fun only.
But the sedan is unperturbed: ESP works without a break, not allowing the rear wheels to slip, and even slightly slip off the stern aside. Literally, any of my provocations insuring electronics immediately cut off. This ride reminded me in part of the computer game in the “race”, when the most basic level to make a mistake and somewhere to fly almost impossible. In this mode, the CTS-V allows you to safely roll into the track in complete safety. Well, after you can already cut off ESP and try to go faster. And we will do it, we have the same track-day!
Here you are an infection!
As with CTS-V you need to be gentle! A little earlier, I opened the gas at the exit from the turn and the powerful V8 compressor seems to leave 19-inch wheels without back tires. And if you go too far at the entrance with speed or work too hard on the steering wheel, then the muzzle goes outside the turn. Still, physics can not be deceived: although the engine is maximally shifted to the front axle, the moment from the heavy motor always works to straighten the trajectory. Therefore, it seems that CTS-V calls inside the turn without special ease. Still would! Five meters in length and 1,850 kg of weight. But do not think that the sports team is clumsy. If you perform all the manipulations gently and in sharp turns try to twist the tail with gas, the CTS-V can “eat” the bends very quickly. Moreover, when there is in the arsenal a smart electronically controlled self-locking device at the back and the correct tires Michelin Pilot Super Sport, which after warming begin to stick to the asphalt, like flies to the tape from insects.
The way CTS-V clings to the road is not only felt in the corners, but also when you leave them. Once it turned out so nicely to “shoot” out of the bend, that the walkie-talkie, on which the instructor informed when to call on the pitlane, the hell out of the cup holder and broke into chips. As they say, for luck: managed to drive a couple extra laps. More simply could not. Overheated tires and “floated” the brakes. They here though are big enough and effective, but nevertheless pig-iron. Engineers General Motors talked with fans of track-days and realized that the ceramic braking system does not even make sense to offer for a surcharge. Firstly, changing the “pottery” is often too expensive, and secondly, the classic system copes with 3-4 “combat” circles during the track-session. Here it is – taking care of customers.
I’m not sure that Cadilllac CTS-V will also be good on public roads. But one thing I know for sure: a 649-strong sedan after the first track-day is capable of infecting the driver with a real racing spirit and will subsequently provoke regular visits … “tracks.”
