He seems to be in Russia. And like he’s not. Mysterious invisible SUV.

I started accepting orders for an upgraded Korean SUV, which received a number of improvements. Those who looked closely at the model, probably with interest, will meet the restyling version. But there is a suspicion that the “broad” Russian car enthusiast will probably not notice it again. It’s like an invisible machine.

It’s not for nothing that the market conjuncture is sometimes compared to powerful currents, which are more expensive to fight against. You’ll fall into the right stream – the elements themselves will take to the saving shore. But you will not get … About ten years ago this trouble was covered by traditional off-road cars. Strong and strong machines were helpless before the tsunami of crossovers. The ranks of the first began to thin away rapidly, and all new developments awaited the unenviable fate of floundering helplessly in the market cycle. “Swam” a few. Look back and count how many “rascals” are left for the middle class? Several Japanese SUVs – that’s all there is to auto dealers. At the same time, interest in real all-terrain vehicles, albeit not the same as before, remains in all price segments.

Kia Mohave is again on the stage in such conditions. This is a relatively recent development (with respect to the life cycle of all frame models, usually calculated in decades), launched with a view to the North American market, but quite in demand in Russia, where more than five thousand cars have been sold since 2009.

What is nappa?

The heads of the KIA have repeatedly said that the success of the new model largely depends on its external attractiveness. On the Russian car market this formula worked without failures. Why am I doing this? I stand, I look at the updated Mohave and I see that the manufacturer, to put it mildly, is not too consistent with his own principles. Well, they painted on the bumpers, changed the falshradiator grille, added the LEDs of the navigation lights. I want to ask: is this all? Something not very visible is the desire to satisfy the returning “demand for brutality.”

This is not a claim to the exterior, and even more so to the quality of external detailing. That’s all right. Koreans have long learned how to make cars no worse than the same Germans. It’s just a pity that with restyling Mohave has not changed the paradigm and again mimics a large crossover. And since he is no longer a young man among the “parketniki”, for whom he gives himself, he is waiting for his unenviable place in branded showrooms somewhere in the far corner.

I dare to give advice to sellers. Hang out that there are some off-road accessories on the Mohave to highlight the car. And managers do not have to pull a potential buyer by the sleeve to bring it to the main SUV brand.

However, if the client is not stupid, he will go in the right direction. The most deadly argument of Mohave is its value. Any SUV competitor, comparable in power, quality of performance and equipment, has a price tag far, far away for three million, and here it is below this threshold, even in the highest configuration.

The second “for” hides inside. Salon for seven seats does not look so miserable, as before. The analog instrument panel has become much more modern. The new steering wheel looks expensive. The center console was decorated with metal edging, an advanced multimedia system and a solid climate control unit. You look at the seats, stitched with a diamond, you hold the palm over the soft leather upholstery, which really looks like a nappa … Well, not bad! The skin, by the way, is also trimmed with the visor of the instruments, and the armrest. And still we look upwards, on a plafond. There – “ERA-GLONASS” with the alarm button. It, of course, is available on simple versions.

To the annoying minus I’ll take the impractical beam of the luggage curtain, which in the removed position in the car has absolutely no place to attach – even just throw it away! But for the first time on Mohave began to install decently sounding acoustics JBL. At the same time in the top version you find the ventilation of seats and four cameras of a circular view.

If the desire to save still prevails over the need to surround ourselves, let not be flashy, but still a luxury, we stop at the basic version of Comfort with a fabric interior and a “parquet” all-wheel drive system. Or on the average Luxe, which has a full set of “warm options”, and in the transmission – a lowering range. But the entire “ammunition” available for Mohave off-road vehicles – a self-locking differential and height-adjustable rear air suspension – will only be in the Premium package.

Bathing in the mud: just calm!

Three-liter diesel V6 is launched in a modern way – a button. The level of vibration and noise of the motor is so small that they start to doubt whether it really works on diesel fuel. Problems of slow warming up of salon at Mohave does not exist. While the power unit goes to its operating parameters, the necessary heat is generated by a regular electric heater. At the same time, the area of ​​the janitors is intensively heated.

All versions of Mohave long ago decided on an eight-speed automatic. They say he’s pretty hardy on off-road (at least, first due to overheating, requires a mercy clutch). And when driving along the streets and routes, there are no claims to the box at all. In the standard mode, it is acceptable blunt, in sports it is responsive, but not epileptic. And, it seems, allows you to save fuel not in words, but in deeds. During the week of operation of the SUV, which in terms of duration was roughly divided equally into country driving and traffic jams, Mohave’s appetite did not exceed 9 l / 100 km on the on-board computer.

The predecessor was sometimes reproached for suspension, which painfully worked out large irregularities and therefore did not seem to be soft enough (even though it had an independent model). It felt more comfortable and smoother – the car already resembles a “full-tilt” full-frame SUV. However, everything that I just wrote down as a merit of shock absorbers of variable rigidity, is leveled by significant unsprung masses. The chassis of large and heavy 18-inch wheels is successfully extinguished only at relatively low speeds. You will go faster – fluctuations willingly will be thrown on a frame and a body. In general, Mohave still does not have the ability to dust over uneven field primers at a rally-raid pace. Better slowly, vainly …

In mud “baths” it is also better to forget about cavalry receptions. I noticed that even with a free all-wheel drive, the SUV behaves in the mud as if the distribution of the torque along the axes was “trapped” in it, which limits the car’s ability to drastically change its trajectory. Take this into account in situations where you have to take an obstacle in motion. At the same time on smooth slippery surfaces, the traction distribution system of unpleasant surprises does not present – the stability of the car’s movement in this case is already determined by the electronic stability program, and it is set up, it seems, as it should.

I foresee an indulgent assessment of all-terrain qualities of Mohave from the owners of advanced Japanese SUVs. But in life for the success of the outings to the wild nature is not so much an SUV, as the professionalism of the driver and the appropriate type of tires. And if such “equipment” is, then what will stop you?

At the same time, under normal conditions, the Korean model puts in place any opponent. Such a small turning diameter, for example, or nine-second dynamics of dispersal to “hundreds” in its class, few people are different. And even more so – a five-year guarantee.
