Rise with a coup. How Volvo changed the idea of all-terrain vehicles

Looks like the V90 Cross Country is a cool modern gadget. But, unlike a smartphone that without the Internet and cellular communications turns into a kind of flashlight, the all-terrain vehicle retains the primary mobile function, even when it climbs above the clouds.

We went up to the pass. Unbelievable, passing at an altitude of only 2200 meters, but one hundred percent certainty that the path will get through on time and without losses, the crew was not observed. A narrow, stony road without any fences required a triple circumspection from the driver, otherwise one could easily get into a deep rut, run into a placer from a rockfall or a crack deep into a wheel.

A slight horror, it seems, was experienced by the car as well – nervously fumbled along the roadside with the beams of LED headlights and suspiciously rigidly kicked the wheels when rolling over large stones. But still half an hour ago V90 Cross Country seemed moderately soft on the move and surprisingly comfortable.

Everyone understands

When, for the sake of interest on ordinary roads, we changed the modes for dynamic, comfortable, economical or off-road traffic (this, by the way, was not before), in the habits of the five-meter wagon, distinctions were clearly felt. At your whim, the steering became light or, on the contrary, heavy, with a pronounced sporting wit, and the gas pedal – dumb or deliberately responsive. The eight-speed automatic range of moods also varied from donkey stubbornness to incendiary samba. However, the effect of the same modes on the tuning of the running gear, on the contrary, was barely felt.

Now we are trying to rotate the beautiful corrugated wheel of “moods”, but with a powerful shaking everything seems to be the same, and the suspension is simply defiantly oak. The machine seemed to be replaced …

I remember what was said in Sweden, when the model was first introduced to the public. It only seems that having increased the clearance by six centimeters and rearranging the passenger car in essence to large heavy wheels, the Cross Country will automatically turn out. This combination conceals a lot of problems with controllability and smooth running. In order not to compromise, the engineers decided to use advanced chassis control through air suspension in the rear suspension and adaptive shock absorbers controlled by the Four-C system. And the driver does not need to do anything – the car itself “rasprobuet” the nature of the coating and the best way to adapt to the style of movement. I think it happened when the flat asphalt was replaced by steep turns and bumpy climbs, on which the racks worked almost for breakdown. The machine did not pity us at all, but obviously took care of itself – never struck neither the bottom nor the front overhang!

We stopped. While colleagues were shooting the “Selphi of the Celestials”, taking advantage of their superiority over the clouds, examined the wheels and found a print of a size under a thick layer of dust on the side walls: 235/45 R20. So that’s it! As always, the company deliberately rolled out cars with the most spectacular wheel disks, so that they looked “a million.” Or rather – all four with a tail, if we talk about the versions submitted for the test.

In my opinion, this choice contradicts the very idea of Cross Country. And if you consider this machine as a “vsedorozhnik”, then my advice to you – take a full-time 18-inch and do not waste your money on a low profile. On normal wheels the model is incomparably more comfortable on a bad road. And the suspension will last longer. And the costs for seasonal tire change will be lower. And the risk of getting a hernia or, God forbid, the breakthrough of the sidewall about sharp stones or the edges of the pits in the asphalt will be an order of magnitude lower. Although…

Who needs what?

To catch a flight, I’m catching up on all the time, carelessly wasted to inspect local attractions. And now V90 Cross Country in the most powerful 320-strong version of T6 and on its 20-inch tires and on the asphalt road that runs through the ravine seems almost a sports car! I’m sure that the related cross-over XC90, with which the new all-terrain vehicle divides the common Scalable Product Architecture platform, this rate of motion did not even dream.

In such a “passenger” duality, the essence of the model lies. In Volvo, it was learned twenty years ago, when they began to produce and then very coolly promoted the theme of all-wheel drive versatile off-road vehicles. There are always motorists who prefer to have one instead of two diametrically different vehicles, but adapted to all cases.

However, this time the Swedish company stepped even further, combining the universal functionality inherent with sophisticated electronic equipment and almost representative status. I see no point in describing everything that Volvo decided to pamper its client – about on-board systems, all kinds of assistants and a class of interior trim nineties and before that everything was told.

I will only point out the main thing: buying a Cross Country even in the basic version (the “entrance ticket” will cost somewhere around three million), you do not get an empty car, but in its finish you can even see the flagship’s luxury gloss. I personally observed with what zealous admiration the representatives of other automobile companies at the auto shows examined the inner content of the new Swedish model. I guarantee that you will see the same envious expressions of persons also among all your acquaintances who travel on other premium stamps.
