Shuttle from the Future

Starting from the center of Warsaw. On the clock – 9:11. No, no, it’s an accident! I was going to leave exactly at nine, but these long minutes, as it should be in a luxury car, I’m sorry, I was kayfovat. When your seat has 14 adjustments, how can it be different? And let me keep silent about the finishing materials. Well, it’s Porsche.

At first I feel like a visitor to a digital exhibition because of the abundance of screens and touch buttons. In my opinion, I will now launch the shuttle to another planet with some awkward movement. With the “ground” connects only an analog tachometer in the middle of the instrument cluster. On the right and left are seven-inch screens. The options for combining pictures are full, although most of them are hardly useful. I brought a detailed section of the map to the device and thereby freed up the space on the main 12.3-inch touchscreen.

Inside, “Panamera” can be guessed except in the shape of the center console and branded watches with a second hand. Some old sores, however, remained. There’s still no place to put the phone – well, not into the glove compartment! Thank you say, by the way, the ERA-GLONASS system, which will take on the Russian versions the only more or less adapted place for the gadget.

Cardinally changed the management scheme of numerous functions. The authorities unconditionally captured the sensors, leaving no buttons to any important position. Even the dampers of the central air deflector are moving, like a sorcerer, without touching them physically. The display itself perceives the position of the fingers and, as soon as you aim, gives out an additional menu. Welcome to the digital world!

But for now, let’s be frank, the new reality is uncomfortable. In “Panamera” virtual buttons are scattered on the long screen sometimes without logic, so it’s better not to use it on the go. “Please disconnect this and this”, it’s easier to ask a colleague than to look for the desired icon on the display with your finger.

Something is regulated by the touch buttons on the glass surface below the screen. At first, it can be assumed that the main set of a young rider was conveniently placed at hand. Forgetting the display, quickly turn off the stabilization system and clamp the suspension with neighboring buttons, then twist on the handlebars (greetings from the 918 Spyder!) Translate into sports mode the engine with the gearbox … And to put forward the spoiler? And to give vent to the sports exhaust system with a clean, natural roar without any synthesizers? Still have to turn to the menu. I’m not talking about the “start-stop”, which also turns off on the screen. And one can not get away with it.

Digital vision

Panamera did not just step into the digital age, but flew into it swiftly. The application Porsche Connect connects the multimedia with the smartphone in almost a single whole. Theoretically, it is possible even before the trip to develop a route and transfer it to regular navigation. But I’m in a car, especially in Porsche, I prefer to drive, not dig into the phone. And I was more interested in new assistants. Can I rely on them in Panamera?

I can not call them revolutionary, but they should have appeared. The system of confinement in the band has not yet reached the point of autopilotation. This is, by and large, a one-time (well, two-time) assistant in case you suddenly look for a phone somewhere under the seat. The assistant will not independently lead the band forever and after a couple of tweaks without your participation hints “Ale!”, Only more polite. He recognizes the marking at speeds of up to 250 km / h and does not wait until the car hits it. That is, it keeps the car in the middle of the strip. Class! It is a pity, the “vision” system fails. The camera, for example, at point-blank does not notice intermittent markings with a short step, and sometimes even a bright double continuous strive to cross. A similar story – with reading traffic signs. Sometimes it seemed that the numbers and symbols on the screen arise from the “Panameric” imagination.

Well, you can not calm down while driving and trust the electronics completely! Smart cruise control and that requires constant participation. In traffic jams, stopping for more than three seconds, to continue driving, you must press the accelerator pedal.

And yet, in a series of modern innovations there are really cool, to the work of which there are no complaints. Speech about matrix LED lights. With them, you can forever overcome the fear of the dark and forget about switching from a driving light to a near.

For more than an hour we have been traveling in this theater of light and we are all waiting for a dirty trick. Someday this system will fail or not? Sharply catch up with the van with barely visible headlights – around it is light as in the day, but the passing car as if in a dark “dome”. I pass the other driver far ahead. And here in the bends of the roads smart lights continue to follow the retiring silhouette, leaving the driver unblinded even a couple of hundred meters away. Another moment – and his car disappeared from sight. Literally immediately around, a bright light flashes. As in second-rate science fiction films, when a flying saucer suddenly sits in the darkness. At such a moment, the main thing is not to get carried away by the sight and watch the road, and not for the play of light and shadow.

But I’ve already seen this in Mercedes. The current generation of intelligent LED headlights Multibeam works absolutely identical. And there, too, the matrix module consists of 84 LEDs. Coincidence? Of course not. As it turned out, Porsche and Mercedes have the same supplier.

The impression a little spoiled the pedestrian illumination system. The night vision camera, based on the thermal imager, accurately shows “warm” objects on the instrument cluster. And, according to the idea, if there is a risk of collision, the headlights should illuminate the person with a triple “shot” of the light beam. But this happened only once during a long trip in the dark. And in more dangerous situations, when carefree pedestrians did not go along the roadside, but directly along the roadway of the country road, the lights did not blink. Why? The question remained unanswered.

From balance to sport

All questions to the new “Panamera” fall away when I finally throw experiments with new technologies and concentrate on the capabilities of Porshev’s “iron.” And someone in them doubted? The main thing that the engineers managed to do is to provide the driver with the right driving sensations. In all three versions – 4S, Turbo and 4S Diesel – more than five meters in length and almost two tons of weight are almost not felt. However, to driving habits “Panamera” and before the claims were few. And now it remains only to carp at trivialities.

But while about the beautiful. I can imagine how difficult it was to stop the “obesity” of the car. The addition of numerous systems does not pass without a trace, so that the struggle for kilograms turned out to be serious. The car became more complicated, but not heavier. In the “Porsche” went a proven method of “losing weight” – more aluminum. In particular, the weight of the body sidewall and the roof were dropped.

More predatory character “Panamera” is felt in all versions. The increase in power did not pass by either of the engines. And this is not just a banal forcing, but a real revision of the design. Take, for example, the basic 4S. For better efficiency, sharp response and instantaneous feedback, the turbo and exhaust manifolds are “moved” inward between the rows of cylinders, the central location of the high-pressure nozzles and other layout solutions.

But I will not ship with technology. Goes like that? Even a 2.9-liter V6 with a power output of 440 hp. is sufficient to achieve “hundreds” in 4.2 seconds. The maximum thrust of 550 Nm “spread” over the range from 1750 to 5500 rpm, so almost always the acceleration of the basic modification “Panamera” seems equally flamboyant. The gas pedal is sport heavy, the steering wheel is elastic and sharp. And what is the new eight-step PDK robot with two clutches? It flips the gears instantly. And for him there will be no problem the sudden start of overtaking after a relaxing ride in the seventh gear. It’s okay – he throws off four steps at once.

In the Turbo version, the robot is generally configured for phenomenally fast switching. Clutching and unlocking of clutches occurs at some crazy pace. The foot slows down the pedal! “Panamera” with a petrol V8 drags all the maximum 770 Nm from 1960 to
4500 rpm. Up to a hundred from the place will pass only 3.6 seconds, and up to 200 km / h – 12.7! Fast? Not that word! But if in 4S with a fast ride I was not left feeling of comfort, then in Turbo, the sportier settings of the robot add unnecessary nervousness even in a comfortable mode.

A similar situation with 4S Diesel. Engineers designed a new PDK with the calculation of both the hybrid and the ability to digest 1000 Nm of torque, so with the most powerful diesel in the history of the Porsche and its mind-blowing 850 Nm and 422 hp. the robot manages to cheer. He does not even need to switch to the lowest gear – the engine will quickly drag forward with 1000 revolutions. Practically with bachelors.

Yes, the robot is too sharp, but, most importantly, it is impetuous. I would say that Turbo and 4S Diesel are more aimed at sports. And in manual mode in these modifications PDK works as honestly as possible, without switching to the top even at the cutoff. To fans of “fall” on the brink is dedicated. But that is the most successful balance between speed and comfort, as in the 4S, no longer exists.

Especially sport is actually enough in all modifications with the Sport Chrono package. The owner of “Panamera” in fact will not be able to deny himself the pleasure of racing with Launch Control? And I, of course, did not deny myself the test, pressing the back of the seat. Another button on the mode switch flashes the Sport Response button. Within 20 seconds in any condition, the engine and PDK switch to work in the most dynamic algorithm.

But if these 0.6 seconds difference in the acceleration in favor of Turbo someone seem critical, I’ll understand. Doubts that you control a relative know-what-model, in the most powerful “Panamera” is not at all. Adds an optional full-drive chassis. The rear wheels can turn to 2.8 degrees, which, by the way, not only screws the five-meter car into a turn at speed, but also makes it easier to maneuver in the parking lot.

To diesel “Panamera” this option can also be ordered. But the impression of the suspension is worse anyway. The car on heavy fuel, of course, is heavier, and a more rigid suspension notices much more irregularities, including small ones. In 4S and Turbo with comfortable settings nothing like this. Float yourself quietly, until the head does not hit the desire to drive in the Sport Plus mode. The adjustment ranges of the shock absorbers are very wide here, because for each rack there are three air chambers with an increased volume.

But what will be pleasant to all owners is the low fuel consumption. Starting with 10 liters in 4S and up to 14 in Turbo – no matter how ignitable, for superpower the figures seem useless. All modifications help save the PDK with two upshifts. They are here solely for reducing costs. A “maximal” can be squeezed and the sixth stage. In turn, the appetite of the petrol V8 also reduces the system of disconnecting the four cylinders at a low load. I assure you, the engine starts to work absolutely imperceptibly for passengers. To diesel, as an option, you can take an enlarged tank up to 90 liters, and this is almost 1500 km without refueling. On paper, of course.

Yes, why should the owner of Panamera not save money? Leave the power units in peace and roll quietly on the half of the cylinders, listening to jazz from the premium speakers of Burmester. When bored – literally pierce the whole body with a frantic torque. And get another, special pleasure drive.
