Hybrid “Seven” BMW: how much will save millionaires

For the second time the Bavarian concern is trying to “shoot” with the hybrid 7-series. What awaits the fresh BMW 740Le iPerformance: failure or breakthrough?

What, in general, can be the goals of someone who has already achieved success? .. Why am I? The thing is that the BMW 7, in fact, is a car that has managed to reach its heights in 40 years of history in all its aspects: comfort, luxury, dynamics … But it is also necessary to continue moving and mastering new skills. That’s why the 7th series is developing further, and in the direction that is becoming more popular – electrification.

Yes, it is to develop further. If you remember, seven years ago the German brand was already bringing to market a hybrid sedan BMW 7-series ActiveHybrid, which has not really taken root in Russia. And now, try number two – the plug-in hybrid version of the BMW 740Le with the prefix iPerformance (a new subbrand of BMW), the main feature of which is the possibility of recharging from the outlet.

Reducing the amount of harmful emissions, reducing fuel consumption … Blah blah blah. For a long time everybody knows that all this works more or less normally only on hybrids of the Toyota Prius hatchback type. But certainly not on a two-ton dolnobaznom sedan of a rank class. So why then the “seven” these hybrid habits? Well, if you cut from the shoulder, then the complicated stuffing in the BMW 740Le is, firstly, like a fashionable gadget that can be bragged on the next social event, and secondly, it’s a nice bonus in the form of a 45 km (!) Power reserve exclusively on Electric traction.

… The battery is filled to the eyeballs, I transfer the hybrid stuffing of the machine to eDrive mode and start to roll only due to the 113-strong electric motor built into the all-wheel drive transmission. Such a tranquil move that, it seems, on this car you can take VIP passengers straight out of bed, without waking up …

And only in the “train” mode you understand how heavy the machine is (after all, one of the most weighty modifications of the “seven” got to us on the test): there is no problem with acceleration, but from the place of an electric motor with a modest output of 250 Nm, Work at full speed, quickly burning battery. Yes, so that after some 20 kilometers of unhurried ride without traffic jams, the battery was emptied into zero and a two-liter petrol “turbo-quater” came to help.

Eh, not for long “seven” was in the role of an electric car. In theory, you can, of course, get from house to office and back without gasoline at all. But to regularly implement this eco-plan, you must at least very much like trees and animals, and as a maximum – have a lot of free time. After all, to fully charge a tiny battery Samsung needs three hours, if you connect to a powerful special station, and about eight (!) – from an ordinary outlet.

Of course, you can not show off and immediately go in a hybrid mode with a charged battery. In this case, the fuel consumption stops at a pleasant mark of 7 liters, but whatever you do, the battery quickly sits down and makes you move mainly for the sedan mode. I called it “after the battery ran out.”

And the difference is not great. Judge for yourself: the mixed flow rises insignificantly – up to 8.5-10 liters per “hundred”, and the union of the internal combustion engine and the electric motor (due to the recuperation in the battery there is always a minimum charge) continues to give to the wheels all the same 326 hp. And 500 Nm, available synchronously with the depressing of the gas pedal. Therefore, even with a discharged battery, you do not lose an instant and seamless start from the place, and also quite confident acceleration: in the seat, of course, does not squeeze, but some ease in the dynamics is definitely felt.

It turns out that all the fuss is due to a few liters of gasoline per “hundred” and savings of about 40,000 rubles per year? Hmm … well, just in case, I’d like to remind you that there is a more affordable diesel version of the 730d with more traction (620 Nm), the same average consumption of inexpensive diesel fuel and twice as large fuel tank …

Okay, okay, there are no more comparisons with the “dirty” cars on heavy fuel, and then ecologists will be trampled … Especially the hybrid “seven” knows and understands its future owners perfectly. These are young billionaires, who love different technologies, respect the environment, but they can not afford to dodge for business on an ordinary Prius. For example, the same founders of Google and similar IT-kings. That’s to help them and comes the BMW 740Le iPerformance, which is able to demonstrate not only the high status of its owner, but also reflect its “green” side of personality. Sounds great, does not it?

Foundation of personality

In general, I admit, I do not understand how inside the “Seven” thoughts about fuel consumption, global warming and some kind of charging can come to mind … Luxury and excellent comfort simply do not allow to think about this! This is the very basis of the “seven” – a success that it will definitely not lose.

Rant about the chic equipment of a representative sedan for 10 million rubles (so much is almost packed BMW 740Le xDrive iPerformance) is too trite. Well, really, listen, this is the latest “Seven” – the flagship of the German company. Of course, inside here only the best materials, high-quality assembly and stunning ergonomics. Well, even my colleague, who usually finds shortcomings in any car with this item, has stalled his truly royal comfort. At the same time, 740Le is devoid of any pathos: everything is where it should be and in the right amount. And with the same 222-m S-Class, which everyone does not cease to praise, the “seven” is literally nostril in the nostril. And for smooth running, and for luxury and comfort. But there is a BMW 7-series one proprietary trump card … Excitement.

And you can feel this trump card only at the wheel of the “Seven”. Despite the two-ton mass and the length of more than five meters, the car on the move is perceived by a reckless and downed sedan of some class E. This kind of compromise between maneuverability and comfort provides an active air suspension and, of course, intelligent steering with variable gear ratio: with rectilinear motion Even the slightest deviations aside are excluded, and in turns it is not necessary “to be wound up” on a wheel (from an emphasis to the stop “баранка” does only two turns).

At the same time, a slightly synthetic, but very transparent connection with the car is strengthened by the presence of an all-wheel drive with an emphasis on the rear wheels. On high-speed bends, of course, there is a certain sweepingness due to the presence of a long “tail”. But in general, even when moving in corners on the verge of a “hook”, the trajectory “seven” holds extremely strictly, without attracting a stabilization system. Yes, such cars in such conditions travel very rarely, but in this case, the overall balance has allowed to significantly raise the bar of comfort.

… You already, probably, forgot that we are talking about the hybrid BMW 7-Series. This is the whole “salt”. After electrification, the Seven remained the same successful machine, but now it can offer a little more. Let “more” is not so perfect and convenient, but nobody ever said that this is the limit of perfection. We must always continue to develop. It is a fact.
