The central-engine Ferrari has never been so docile and easy to manage. Even the launch-control could not camouflage it. And here – lightning reactions. After each start from the next traffic light in Maranello, the blow follows the blow. To match the motor – a seven-stage robot with two clutches, borrowed from the world of “Formula 1”. It shoots so fast that the process itself is almost invisible.
Forward! In advance, I press the back of the head to the headrest, softening the overload. The maximum torque of 760 Nm is available almost at the bottom. Therefore, in the 488 GTB, the acceleration in both the jet plane and take-off is not a single stumbling block. Where there sports cars with ordinary atmospheric eight … And here the dynamics of the sensations – like the 12-cylinder sports cars. For example, like the same F12 Berlinetta with its six-liter motor. Only nine seconds and twice the speed limit of the toll highway.
Finalizing turbines for 488GTB, changing their algorithm of operation and minimizing possible pressure losses, engineers were able to outperform themselves. Increasing the size of the “snails”, they first applied a light titanium-aluminum alloy in the impellers to reduce inertia. The same material is used in the production of jet engines … Tepepr turbines instantly pound in a small engine for the required airflow and do not become an obstacle for him even when the motor spins up to a maximum of eight thousand revolutions! At the same time, the principle of “our and yours” is respected: and ecologists will not be offended (according to emissions, the new Ferrari fits into the most stringent norms of the European Union), and buyers are happy – they will get a very dynamic sports car.

But I’m already on serpentine. Turning to manual mode and immediately draw attention to how resilient the new motor. For example, in the second gear, the thrust stock is so impressive that you can not switch in the speed range from 20 to 100 km / h. This simplifies the passage of the turns at the limit of the possible – there is no need to click the paddle lob once more to start accelerating with the greatest intensity already in the turn. Thrust and so for the eyes!
The continuation of our duel takes place just in those places where I lit up earlier on “California”. Almost on each of the local mountain spirals there are several insidious pins. After all, as is known, the higher the power-trainer has, the more problems with control over the car. It is almost impossible to fight the laws of physics, having such high figures. And how else: when weighing along the axes in the proportion of 40 to 60, given the enormous power, the sports car simply has to slide at the entrance to a steep turn. Therefore, the first turns I pass cautiously, in the most clamped mode sport. But, not noticing the hint of the obstinacy of the machine, I spread the electronic collars, shifting the selector of the dynamic modes “Manettino” to the right. Now the mode is Race. In it, steep bends fly faster and easier, easier than on other Ferrari models. It seems that even the most experienced driver will cope with this exercise. Terrific!
A road sign warns that a steep hairpin is ahead, that is an insidious trap for careless drivers. Absolutely all the owners of sports cars (about the usual silent) are forced to strongly quench the speed here, otherwise they will certainly be removed to the side. Straight into the stones! And my Ferrari now, at least, is that the suspension and brain of the modernized Side Slip angle Control (CCS2) system, which controls the third generation E-Diff differential lock and the algorithms of the F1-Trac anti-slip system by accelerometer signals, work so clearly that even very gross errors, instantly leveled. Such an electronic prompter immediately starts to corrupt you. Everything is allowed? Oh really?
Checking the carbon-ceramic brakes is unexpectedly satisfied with a wide truck, which for some reason appeared on a deserted mountain serpentine. Precisely do not riders! The pedal on the floor and shoulder tightly cuts the seat belt. Now there will definitely remain a red strip – a memory of serpentine. By the way, the stock at the ceramics is such that it would be possible to brake more smoothly.
Passing a bunch of sharp kinks of the road, I suddenly felt that I was overzealous. “Four-eight-eight” began to be thrown from one side to the other with such force that it became frightening for specially designed for this model sports tires. But the car passed a speedy snake quite calmly.
I click “Manettino”, disabling SSC2. Now the madness will begin! And there will come a moment of truth for the chassis “488”. The car gets like a new degree of freedom – that no turn, then a short slip under the characteristic squeal of tires, which seem to ask for mercy. But even when this sonic hysteria becomes permanent, the “red passion” rushes along clear predictable trajectories.
And the buses all sing to the engineers. They fought for every millimeter, borrowing the technology of formula cars and hypercar “LaFerrari”, trying to strengthen the downforce. Optimized each airflow – dividing it under the bottom, improving in the area of wheel arches and in the wing area. And also changed the architecture of the diffuser. And now the clamping force is 50 percent higher than in the 458th. The phenomenal result – the ratio of the clamping force to the drag has reached a record even for the Ferrari indicator – 1.67. But even in the extreme 458 Speciale, it was only 1.50! That’s the effect of the “magnetic cushion”.
