Audi TT RS: Chewing Reflex

“We chew” the bends of the race track on the fastest compact sports car.

Do you know what the strongest muscles are? Chewing! Their strength of pressure can reach a whole “hundred” kilograms! It’s me that the extreme “two-door” Audi TT RS, overtaking all competitors in a straight line, is such a “muscle” in its class. It remains to verify how the arsenal of compact dimensions, four hundred “horses” and full drive help the most powerful “muscle” to function.

Forward to track

Well, where else to experience the brainchild of the sports division of Audi Sport, which develops these racing cars?

Moscow Raceway – too corny. The ADM Raceway is still laying a new asphalt. Definitely you need something different, interesting, but adapted to serious races. Exactly! There is also the Atron International Circuit in Ryazan! Yes, the track is small and primarily designed for karting, but, on the other hand, it does not prevent to conduct there the largest in our country drift competitions, as well as other serious auto racing like the stage of the Russian championship in rally cross-country.

However, before Ryazan still need to get, with its own course, of course. And with this, TT RS has no problems at all. With a quiet ride on the highway, the muscle relaxes, as if slowly helping chew the cud: in the cabin quietly, the celestial robot without hesitating goes through the gears, the motor spends less than nine liters per “hundred”, and the sports active dampers are very, very trying to smoothly work out the irregularities . If it was my will, I would go on an “erske” on some trip around Europe and I am sure that I would not be disappointed in the level of comfort either. Of course, provided that the route is on flat roads. Otherwise, you’ll have to tap into the beat of your favorite song in the shaking.

And in the city Audi TT RS feels comfortable, but, however, for some reason almost does not attract the attention of passers-by (especially girls). Even despite the “toothy” body kit with large air intakes, a spoiler on the trunk lid and large oval trunks release. However, the recipe for “surprise everyone” still exists: by clicking the button in the salon we open special shutters in the exhaust system and properly “weal” the right pedal, dumbfounding the street with a “tasty” screaming rumble, which is accompanied by a predatory howl of a five-cylinder turbo. Sometimes I can not believe that this brutal sound (listen to the audio below) is produced by a motor with a volume of only 2.5 liters.

The key is to start!

“The session of the karting players has ended, you can leave, the track is at your disposal,” – is delivered by radio from the control center of the Atron highway.

Stop. Not so fast. To adapt the TT RS for a ride on the track, you need to do a number of operations, which, it seems, is what launches the rocket into space: turn off the stabilization system or switch it to Sport, the engine and suspension mode in Dynamic, and the gearbox must be reclosed into sports work. By the way, looking ahead, I note that even in this mode the robotic box does not transfer to the lower gears, so it’s more efficient to switch manually with the help of paddle lobes.

The chewing muscle develops a great force, since it has a significant torque. A “ereska” is powerful, because with a small mass (1,440 kg), it has a 400-strong motor with a twin-turbine turbine integrated into the collector. In a more understandable language, this means that a solid thrust of 480 Nm is available in almost the entire speed range (1,700-5,850 rpm) without a hitch. Every time you exit the turn or accelerate straight, you really feel like an astronaut during the launch of the rocket. Think about it – 3.7 seconds to “hundreds”! With such figures are friends such manufacturers as Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini. And here – a compact coupe Audi, which you can safely ride even in winter.

Oh, but how nice the TT RS goes through the twists and turns! On the road, “erska” as if compressing the cap with all the power: the machine feels so downtrodden, very understandable in control, and most importantly, safe due to the full drive. Of course, because of the features of the MQB trolley sports coupe all also traditionally seeks to go outside the bend. But it compensates for the understeer of the supercharging of the all-wheel drive clutch, which manages to instantaneously transfer a portion of traction to the rear wheels and turn the tail to the inside of the turn. Similar behavior in “eraska” and on a protracted arc. Where there is a need to drive slowly on a mono-drive car, the TT RS allows the tires to “pile up” under the whistling whistle, spinning into the bend under the draft and under the gas discharge.

At the same time, the car itself does not require the driver to drive unnecessarily. In any modes, feedback on it comes predictable, clear and pleasantly viscous. And because of the fact that the rudder makes only two turns from the stop to the stop, you do not have to wind on the steering wheel in steep stiletto heels.

“What’s wrong with that?” – I exclaimed from discontent, when after only a few laps I began to miss the apexes, and when braking the car began to scour from side to side. The answer is simple: overheating of tires. The fact is that the tires on the test TT RS stood Hankook Ventus S1 Evo2. Firstly, they turned out to be unsuitable for the track, and secondly, they are not installed on the “erusk” from the plant. Oh, here would be native and more effective Pirelli P Zero or even better – track P Zero Corsa. But not destiny. We work with what is.

But the brakes pleased. In the track mode, cast iron mechanisms with eight-piston machines in front are quite enough for several savory “combat” circles. Even with the stabilization system turned on, which constantly brakes the wheels in the sports mode, so that the car can go into the povot more willingly. However, again, everything depends on the ambient temperature, the configuration and the quality of the coverage of a particular route. In any case, there is an alternative: for a surcharge, you can put carbon-ceramic brake discs and forget about the overheating of the pads.

If we sum up, then it’s easy and safe to manage the “Erasque”. And on the racing track, it is likely to outrun competitors such as Porsche 718 Cayman S or BMW M2. And not only on a straight line. In this case, in the case of the Audi TT RS, all this electromechanical stuffing does not turn it completely into a cyborg. The machine remains alive and mobile, like a muscle. The strongest “muscle”.
