An inconspicuous upgrade. How the Volkswagen Amarok has changed

No matter how the advertising brochures shouted about the new Amarok, the car was only slightly refreshed in the now accepted manner

One of the few pickup trucks on the Russian market, finally, has experienced restyling.

No matter how the advertising brochures shouted headlines about the new Amarok, presented in 2010, the car is now a bit refreshed in the traditional manner for modern car makers. Nevertheless, he has something to brag about.

The main changes in the Volkswagen Amarok in the cabin – on the outside slightly adjusted the optics and bumper. It has become more interesting, but in general it is a change in the format “put two cars next to each other and find a few differences.”

But the interior was reconsidered completely, literally there was not a single old detail left – although Amarok belongs to the commercial division of Volkswagen, the salon suddenly decided to bring to one vector with the car’s line of mark. The new steering wheel and seats, a new dashboard, leather and a multimedia system with a touch screen with a diagonal of 16.5 cm – all this suits the status of an off-road vehicle rather than a truck. But the price of these pickups does not have any use for dirty work – the cost starts from 2,131,200 rubles, and the maximum equipment and altogether zashkalivaet for 3.5 million. Expensive would come transportation, and not for them made “cool” pickups.

The main thing is not to tell anyone what’s under the hood. Two-liter diesel, even if forced, 180-strong with two turbines, pickup is not enough. Before “hundred” the car with “automatic machine” is dispersed almost 11 seconds. The motor constantly has to be twisted at the limit. As a result, we get a bumpy roar of the engine, bursting into the cabin, and a solid fuel consumption – about any declared 8.3 liters can not be a question. Real indicators in the city-route mode are within 12-13 liters.

There is also good news – soon in Russia there will be “Amarok” with 3.0-liter V6, the same motor is put on diesel Volkswagen Touareg and some Audi. With the new unit will be quite another matter – 7.9 seconds to “hundreds” and 550 Nm of torque. Such cars will come to us in the spring of 2017 and will be more expensive. But waiting for three-liter versions definitely worth it. In the meantime … well, just keep quiet about what’s under the hood and pretend that we prefer a very impressive way of driving …

Frame construction, rear suspension on the springs – this is what Amarok should be valued for. This in our time has remained almost only on pickup trucks. There is another bonus – Volkswagen in the near future can release a full-fledged low-cost jeep on this basis. Promises are not officially confirmed, but there are plans.

The drive, which comes complete with an “automatic” – honest permanent full, with a Torsen interaxle differential, optionally even locking the rear inter-wheel differential. The central differential is asymmetrical, the torque diverges in proportions of 40/60 in favor of the rear axle.

But there is no demultiplikator. “Hopping up” seems to be replaced by a shortened first gear – but no, with a two-liter engine, this story does not pass, he lacks traction.

There are electronic “off-road” modes, “strangling” the motor and not allowing to stall. In general, on the “floated” track without serious boracs Amarok feels fine even on highway tires.

Serious impassability will not storm, and not because of insufficient “weapons” – a long base limits such opportunities. The reason is banal – geometric patency. In the ravine, which would easily pass Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, Amarok just rested on the front. If persistently move on, you can just leave it without the bumper.

But the behavior on the asphalt for a frame car with a rear suspension on the springs at “Amaroka” is just a reference, especially when the body is loaded. Of course, it’s just not right to compare the crossover on the multi-link on comfort, it’s a completely different story. On the waves throws a noticeable, but to go with a cruising speed of about 130 kilometers per hour can be completely calm. Stability, despite the design, is closer to a normal car than to a truck.

Of course, such a car is not quite suitable for the city, although on narrow central streets, given the excellent visibility and rear-view camera, there is no problem. Rather, it is an ideal companion for long-distance travel, which was perfectly proved by the trans-Asian expedition.

In Russia, “Amarok” now also has no alternatives – only utility utensils are officially supplied to us from pick-up trucks. About American premium pickups you can forget – the import of cars that are not officially supplied to Russia, and therefore not having an ERA-GLONASS system, since the beginning of 2017 is completely banned.
