1200 km on one tank. Is it realistic to save on a diesel Citroen C4?

Diesel for the golf class is now akin to a solar eclipse – the same rarity. Really unprofitable? Counting along with Citroen C4.

Diesel for the golf class is now akin to a solar eclipse – the same rarity. Really unprofitable? Counting along with Citroen C4.

Almost Utopia

I’m standing in front of the railway crossing, just after refueling “under the neck.” For almost half an hour, the eternal composition with the tanks is woven. The tank of a diesel sedan Citroen C4 seemed to me the same eternal, although it has only pitiful compared to bottomless oil barrels of 60 liters. True, the diesel engine. And this, according to the on-board computer, is enough for as much as 1200 km. That is, you can go from Moscow to St. Petersburg, come back and remember the existence of the gas station at the end of the trip.

Okay, a little exaggerated. Just before refueling, I managed to put a personal record on the track for a few kilometers “straight” after zeroing – 3.8 liters of diesel fuel per hundred. Here are the “brains” and counted. And as if they were shy about the economy of their own comrade-motor. With such a flow of 60 liters of tank, it would be possible to drive more.

Eh, it’s still an automotive utopia that does not happen. Plus it is necessary to take into account not always correct electronics. As fuel was burned under normal conditions, I got other results. But not with such a cardinal difference to grab the head. Real figures (and this can be seen from the device in the photo) for a month of test drive were, of course, higher. Nevertheless, the passport values are far from gone – in the mixed cycle, the average consumption was 6.5 liters. With the highway and the city in about the same proportion as expected. If it were not for Moscow, it would have been six liters easy. As evidenced by measurements on the relatively empty streets of the capital. And on suburban roads in any rhythm – and at all in the “five”.

Thanks to Citroen for trying to instill European values to our motorists, while other few companies put a cross on diesel in a golf class for Russia. And our C4 – the most that neither is the European option. With a six-speed manual transmission, as expected. And, you know, this “pen” never bothered me. It’s not just a matter of reverent attitude to this “antiquity”. For what I like the mechanics of “Citroen”, so it’s for its convenience, softness and yet clarity. This applies to the pedals and the gearshift lever. Everything is so nice, smooth and unmistakable, like, as the girls say, “you drive a gun.”

I’m sure even the most pompous skeptic had a pleasant surprise. When from something you get more than expected. As with the 1.6-liter HDi 115 engine. It has an excellent power-to-thrust ratio of 270 Nm at 114 hp. Naturally, above 120 km / h, the anticipation of a lush acceleration is senseless. But to leave from any daily situation, as they say, on one twisting moment it will turn out always. For the track the engine is beautiful – put 100 km / h on the sixth step, and, hardly coming out for 1000 turns, in silence and tranquility (and the noise insulation for the class is exemplary) roll on. And, which is especially cool, you will always “pull out” the car on the same gear almost from the idle.

Of course, the diesel C4 is heavier than gasoline, and for general comfort on the go it’s only a plus. At least in Russia. And without that the Citroën’s all-absorbing suspension seems even more omnivorous. Unevenness from small to large seems to disappear for a moment before meeting with the wheels.

Maybe it’s giving up in the cold? No, our C4 even found a bit of severe frost. And after a three-day parking lot, wound up, as the motorists say, “with poltychka.” That once again confirms – refueling in the right places will not give reason to doubt the merits of the diesel engine. Especially so pleasant.

One diesel warrior

And now the most ambiguous. Let’s find out if a diesel in a golf class is advantageous in the example of C4. With an average annual mileage of 30,000 km and our average consumption of 6 liters, we receive 68,400 rubles a year at Moscow prices for “diesel fuel”. With the base VTi 115, consuming 7.5 liters in the same real conditions, it turns out to be 88 875. In turn, with a top 150-horsepower gasoline engine and an automatic machine with a real mixed consumption of about 9 liters, it turns out already 106 650 rubles. That is, the difference in the first three years of warranty operation will be based on rough estimates of 60,000 from 100,000 rubles.

Quite a lot, but what about the prices? The average configuration of the FEEL Edition, it is also one of the most popular, for the diesel is the maximum. LED lights, climate control, parktronics – the minimum necessary set for daily needs in it is. In this version HDi 115 will cost only 85 000 rubles more than the starting VTi 115 and even 34 000 rubles cheaper THP 150.

It turns out that in the diesel sedan of the golf class there is a financial sense, and yet what. At least, it is in the Citroen C4. Especially if you are going to travel more than three years and yet do not wake up every day with the desire to “pile on”. In arguments against, I can write down that there is still a strong mistrust of the quality of diesel fuel in Russia. Otherwise, it would be just a hit of sales in the absence of “diesel brothers”.
