Ferrari turbine – well forgotten old

In February 2014 the company from Maranello introduced an updated version of its best-selling Ferrari California T. The first in the history of the brand coupe-convertible, in addition to changes in appearance, interior and suspension also received a completely new engine. Previously, the youngest of the prancing stallion raced toward the horizon aspirated V8 in volume of 4.3 liter direct-injection, but now it will make 3.8 V8 twin-turbo. And that fans of the brand considered, we can say for treason.

Why the fuss?

The new engine – a blood relative of the motor from the Maserati Quattroporte sedan, subjected to considerable revision. In comparison with the pre-reform California passport all the key indicators have improved: increased by 70 hp power, almost twice – up to 755 Nm – increased torque, reduced to 3.6 seconds acceleration time to "hundreds" and the maximum speed a little bit grown up.

And most importantly – no turboyamy characteristic of many supercharged engines. It would seem, should only stand up and applaud the heirs of the Great Commendatore, who managed to improve an already excellent car and came close to the initial model of the company's flagship. But not all so simple …

Fans Ferrari is very jealous of any changes that can blur the image of the great prancing stallions. And one of the revered symbol is just the unique sound of the exhaust (which "spoil" the blades of turbine wheel, standing in the way of the flow of gases from the cylinders) and no turbid clear feedback Italian "aspirated" with the driver. But the transition to turbocharging and it is quite possible to regard as a return to the story!

Why Italians turbo?

In the mid-80s things were not going well at Ferrari. Strong sales fell in the key US market, and in Formula 1 porazhaniya Italians suffered under the onslaught of McLaren, Brabham Williams and Lotus. But the trouble does not come alone, and in 1985 at the Frankfurt Motor Show bitter rivals from Porsche stunned the all new "959 m." Supercar equipped with 450-horsepower engine with two turbochargers was very advanced for that time "stuffing": intelligent all-wheel drive, the system will adjust the ride height, 6-step "mechanics" in conjunction with "intelligent" electronic clutch Porsche Control Clutch. On the background of all their then supercars, including the flagship Ferrari 288 the GTO, immediately seemed clumsy ancient dinosaurs. Not wanting to give the Germans the palm on the market, Enzo Ferrari ordered to urgently prepare an adequate response.

What he turbosuperkar Ferrari?

They became the Ferrari F40 – the last car developed during the life of Commendatore. The concept could be expressed very succinctly: lightweight, rigid body and a powerful motor. The basis for the new supercar chosen space frame design of the racing GTO Evoluzione, which further strengthened to give greater rigidity.

The suspension on double triangular wishbone also went to newcomer inherited. But the body was completely new. The design of such a vital project can be entrusted only to the old partners from Pininfarina. And designer Leonardo Fioravanti was able to create a truly inexpressible words, the combination of plastic and rudeness, aggression and tenderness, embodied in carbon, aluminum and Kevlar. The massive rear wing and a myriad of vozduhozabrnikov not only carried out their work to improve the aerodynamics, but also skillfully played on the image of racing cars for public roads.

This style has been respected and inside: the supercar had no audio system and air conditioning, virtually no insulation, and side windows are made of plastic. Any other car with "meat" could hardly count on serious success with customers. But Ferrari knew what they were doing. As a result, all the tricks F40 weighed on average a good three quintals less than its competitors. No wonder that, with a turbocharged V8 engine with 475 hp, the supercar reaches the first "hundred" in less than 4 seconds and became the first road car capable of speeds over 300 km / h.

Steeper than the Porsche

Comparative tests with the main rival showed that Ferrari uncompromising approach paid off. Despite the advanced four-wheel drive, which gave Porsche 959 advantage at the start, when it reaches 200 km / h "German" was a sad look after the rapidly retreating F40. The larger 350 kg less weight and 25 hp power of doing their job. Maximum speed is 321 km / h, in principle, it was impossible for the German supercar.

F40 perezentovali year celebrating fortieth anniversary of the company, namely 21 July 1987. Although the initial price of 400 thousand dollars, the car began to buy. However, in order to cope with this car I needed a little racing experience, and for a long drive – an enviable composure and physical strength to boot. Furious suspension shakes the soul of every driver on uneven ground clearance was extremely small, and the steering and the brakes were not amplifiers.

But for fantastic performance and magic name supercar forgave all. Even the fact that the price of a couple of years in connection with the modernization jumped a hundred thousand, did not matter. Some were willing to pay for and F40 million. According to rumors, it is up to the amount of income such speculative resale value supercar. The whole point of excessive demand: it was initially planned to release 400 cars, but orders were collected much more, and the production was stopped at 1 200 copies. As a result, enterprising lucky gladly resell brand new Ferrari with a minimum mileage for fabulous sums.

Exclusive version

There will always be customers who own a small supercar, they want to be something very special. They created a series of special model Ferrari F40, which are currently the object of desire of any avtokollektsionera. So, in 1989, the studio Michelotto forces racing version was built, called the Ferrari F40 LM. Bore up to three liters of engine has an output of 720 hp and katapultroval supercar to "hundreds" of 3.1 seconds. Maximum monster speed was 367 km / h. Circulation was minimal – only 19 cars. Now the cost of any of them exceeds value of the original F40 several times. In addition, Michelotto had a hand in the creation of seven and seven F40 GT F40 GTE for the Italian and British racing championships.

Another rare version is the only one of its kind right-hand drive version of the supercar. The car was created in multiple copies on the order of the Sultan of Brunei and was distinguished as a more luxurious interior trim and more comfortable seats taken from the Ferrari Testarossa.

But one the most exclusive option has been created for the executive director of FIAT Gianni Agnelli. The car features a black cloth-trimmed seats (standard machines were content in red) and the absence of a clutch pedal. The fact is that due to a leg injury lord Agnelli was uncomfortable operated with a manual. The Ferrari went to meet this particular client and have applied at this F40 Valeo electronic clutch system, originally developed for the rally version of Lancia Delta Integrale.

Now what?

As you can see, turbocharging for Ferrari – not a novelty.

Will the new Ferrari California T cult, time will tell. But as Ferrari cleverly combines new trends with its glorious historical past, is only respect. And the "arms race" has not been canceled among supercars.
