Existing in a single copy of the Mercedes-Benz 680 S Torpedo Roadster Saoutchik put up for auction

Cars, whose age exceeds 80 years, already by virtue of their status can be considered rare. However, even among such oldtimers there are really unique machines, besides existing in a single copy. One of these rarities – Mercedes-Benz 680 S Torpedo Roadster, released in the distant 1929. What is its uniqueness?

We move to the distant 1926 year. In Germany, which is in economic decline, the merger of Daimler and Benz companies is coming to an end. The new alliance allowed to unite the forces of leading designers, among them were Ferdinand Porsche, Hans Niebel and Fritz Nallinger. The result of the work of engineers was the new Mercedes-Benz Typ S – a car based on a steel frame of U-shaped sections. The car was driven by a 6.8-liter six-cylinder in-line engine with a power of 120 hp. The model attracted the attention of the public of those times and enjoyed the stable love of fans of technology. But an even more interesting turn was made in 1928.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, the construction of own bodies for particular models used special popularity. Not an exception was the atelier of Yakov Savchik, a designer who emigrated from the Russian Empire to France. His company called Saoutchik offered his vision for the Model S. In August 1928, the chassis of Typ S No. 35949 was delivered to the “Frenchman” workshop, where the main work was carried out. The car received a special body of gray color, soft roof, interior, decorated with red leather, as well as other improvements.

As a result, the work called Mercedes-Benz 680 S Torpedo Roadster Saoutchik was shown at the Auto Show in New York in 1929. At the same time, the car was purchased by its first owner – oil tycoon Frederick Henry Bedford, who traveled on it until his death in 1952. After that, the car remained in the possession of Bedfords until 2008, until it was put up for sale. In 2012, the unique Mercedes-Benz 680 S Torpedo Roadster Saoutchik won the top prize at the Pebble Beach Automotive Elegance Competition, and in 2013 was awarded a similar event at Villa d’Este. By the way, it was in 2013 that the unique Mercedes last changed its owner, having left under the hammer for 8 250 000 US dollars.

However, the time goes by, and the Mercedes-Benz 680 S Torpedo Roadster Saoutchik is again being prepared for sale. This time, trades around the rare roadster will unfold on May 27, 2017 in the Italian town of Villa Erba. The organizer of the event, the auction house RM Sotheby’s, has not yet disclosed any details of the upcoming event. But with certainty we can say that the auction will be hot. After all, according to calculations of the organizers of trading Mercedes-Benz 680 S Torpedo Roadster Saoutchik will go under the hammer for at least 6.5 million – 8 million euros.
