Subaru Fast, but not like at all
Subaru brand Stanislaus "infected" friends. Initially, he wanted to buy the Legacy, but ride on the Forester, realized that it is necessary to choose this model. And choose also for relative exclusivity: nimble "Foray" we have practically no – generally all choose the Impreza, and the more interesting it is to build a project on the basis of this car.
He chose the Subaru Forester STi with a two-liter turbo engine EJ205 producing 240 horsepower, 4-speed automatic transmission, all-wheel drive and vinyl Monster Energy. The car stayed in the katabatic embodiment about six months, while Stas eliminated the shortcomings inherited from the previous owner, well then, after the beginning of the tuning process.
Tuning starts with repairs
The first step has been implemented Coil suspension, because the regular, even STi-shnaya, the feelings were too rolls. In addition, a slightly raised supercharging turbine and installed 3-inch exhaust system with a finite jar Kakimoto Racing Impreza from the ring (very much like a loud and characteristic Subaru 'Bububu' exhaust) to give output of about 280 forces. Along the way, the owner of the staff put buckets on the Subaru Impreza, because the lateral support is underdeveloped in runoff seats. In this configuration, the vehicle proezdil four years, and nothing substantial in it has not changed.
However, before last winter, for unknown reasons, the engine began to overheat. The first originated the idea was this: blew a gasket for a cylinder head. Forester went to repair, and after the opening of the motor Stanislav decided that if to all to understand, is not easy to sort out, and to strengthen the stuffing.
At first just wanted to "throw" forged pistons, but in the end came to the stroker whale at 2.2 liters: acquired forged pistons Mahle, forged connecting rods Manley, ACL Race liners and the crankshaft from the 2.5-liter EJ257 engine. Well begun modifying the engine, and decided that would be nice to throw out "automatic" and put a 6-speed manual gearbox from the Subaru Impreza STi. Stas was able to purchase a full set of on-swap Impreza WRX STi 2002: the box itself, drives, gearbox and rear fists to set the brakes on the same Impreza. Speaking of brakes: once upon a time he went to the front calipers on the Impreza WRX STi, which he immediately set, so it was just to purchase back.
While going to a new engine for Forester and implanted a new gearbox, Stanislav argued that the revision of the car clearly went beyond "merely technical refresh of the car." His Subaru had become a machine for gay prohvatit the city and the rare visits to the ring, with a capacity of 370-400 forces. But there was one unresolved problem: the computer to Forester 2001 issue are not "sewn", that is not amenable to reprogramming. The output was the same: to buy all the wiring on the computer from the Subaru Impreza WRX STi, and at the same time replace the dashboard, putting beautiful optitron all from the same Impreza. But for the implantation of all these changes still needed and the intake manifold from the Impreza: it has a different arrangement of standard sensors, and at the same time it is more productive. Suitable took on a special version of the Spec-C (without flaps TGV – Tumble Generator Valves).
Appetite is known, comes with eating … Stanislav did not stop there and bought the turbine IHI VF48 by the Impreza in GRB body, more efficient injectors Injector Dynamics capacity of 1000 cc and the fuel pump Walbro 400 l / h, to allow the engine enough volume fuel. All parts were collected and put in place about two months, and after the new year began the process of running-heavy: already very much wanted to drive, but it was still not possible.
What-what? Four, you say? Pf …
During this time, take a ride with friends, Stas understood that the machine 400 forces is nothing new. He turned sprightly wagon that many who give a light in the stream, but still not what he wanted. And tuning continued: he decided to build a car with an eye on 500 horses. Just in time for the end of a painful break-in could find a replacement for the existing turbine: a very cool version of Precision Turbo Company. Under the new thing boiled new downpipe and appayp, set the wastegate Tial 44mm, map-sensor 4 bar, the front cooler for better cooling, redesigned intake and thrown out the meter.
After mounting the new things we had to set up all this wealth. The procedure Stas entrusted proven expert Vlad Fet from Belarus, and it turned out that the turbine Precision Turbo is too big and too late inflated: its operating range was very small, even taking into account that the motor rotates freely to 8,200 rpm. I had to change the turbine: it was removed the next day and replaced by another, all from the same company Precision Turbo – PTE 6262. Thereafter Forester set up again, but the operating range will still remain too small: from about 5000 until 8200 rev. Nevertheless, the machine showed 477 horsepower supercharged on 2 bars that have been a good result, close to that desired. But the guys all decided that it is necessary to change the turbine again and extend the operating range. It turned out successfully exchanged for "snail" from the American company Forced Performance-based Garrett 3082, under it again welded downpipe and appayp and all this wrapped Thermoband. Aspiration before winter limited the mark of 1.5 bar, and yet the machine is finally "gone" much earlier and more vigorously – with about 4200 rev / min.
But this is not the end
Now Forester waiting for the trip to the stand, in order to compare the results obtained when the boost pressure is increased. By the way, it is planned to establish at the level of more than 2 bar, and the next season because the car again waiting for a number of improvements: the replacement cylinder heads, a higher performance camshaft, the second fuel pump and methanol, and other "stuff".
Stas says that all this time Forester construction process has become the pursuit of the ideal car for him. It seeks to create the fastest station wagon in its class, but the machine is built mostly for fun. Cherished goal – to achieve power over 600 horsepower.
